"I decided to do something a little different for this one as I knew you guys were open to that. The mix is just over an hour long and consists of emotional music that could broadly be classed as "ambient". For me, "ambient" has always been an important part of what I do and it's nice to get a chance to compile some favourites. Now that I've made it I'll be happy to have it to listen to for myself."
Having a label called Minimise can be a tough gig these days. Yet Donnacha Costello has always been in it for the long haul, launching the imprint in the late 90’s before minimal became a fad with the understanding that minimalism is an approach, a characteristic — not a genre. First coming into prominence with an album for Force Inc. and the ambient classic Together Is The New Alone for Mille Plateaux, he unleashed the Colorseries upon the world from January to October in 2004, a now classic succession of 12″s that ranks with Studio 1 and Concept 1 as one of the most intriguing concept series in techno.
Throw in another series entitled 6×6=36, a new label called Look Long and numerous records released throughout and Costello’s back catalog grows in both quality and quantity. Today sees the release of Before We Say Goodbye, his fourth album and a wonderful journey through his melodically charged sound. We caught up with Costello for a quick chat a bit about the album as a format and his love for old gear while he provided LWE with its 46th exclusive podcast, a trip through his early influences and favorite records.

There are few artists these days who consistently succeed to focus their passions, talents and instincts into deliciously individual, melancholic, beautiful and timeless recordings. Irish born Donnacha Costello is amongst the highest ranks of such artists.
So, Poker Flat is proud to announce Donnacha Costello‘s new full length album. ‚Before We Say Goodbye‘ is an exquisite work to say the least. Focusing on a rich blueprint, with echoes of Chicago House, Detroit Techno and UK Ambient Techno flowing through its futuristic core, Donnacha explores further his love for deep, hypnotising grooves, rich synth themes and emotive harmonies.

Although few might admit it, we musicians/artists/performers are, to a greater or lesser degree, narcissists. As such, the offer of my own monthly column with free rein regarding content should excite me wildly.
In many ways it does and I\'m looking forward to it. There is no chance of being misrepresented, no chance of being misquoted, I won\'t have to discuss things I\'d rather not discuss and I can edit and re-edit every word I write. However, having accepted the offer, the thought that this might be something of a Faustian bargain hit me. With me being the source of the articles, every word I write my own and with everything online being archived i realised with some apprehension that I may have been given just enough rope with which to hang myself.
With that in mind, I make the following promise: I\'m going to open myself up a little, in the knowledge that it could all go horribly wrong. If I hang, I hang but hopefully we\'ll have a little fun a long the way and I will particularly encourage interaction via comments or even twitter.
Words don’t do justice to this one. Simply drop the needle on the record and escape to an alternate universe on a magic carpet of analog synths and drum machines. “Ten Thousand Hours” appears as a very limited one sided vinyl edition and won’t be re-pressed. Don’t sleep.
036.1 Donnacha Costello - Miss Synclaviera is Next Level Detroit influenced big room techno with strong groove, masterful arrangement and subtly juxtaposed time signatures.
036.2 Donnacha Costello - Tears Of The Vampire wraps melancholy string arrangements around propulsive beats and bass with Donnacha\'s fine attention to detail and trademark digital edits.
Donnacha Costello - While in Exile will be free on minimise.com and to purchase as high quality MP3s and WAVs exclusively on Beatport.
How many of today’s producers have been releasing music for 13 years? Not Many. How many will still be recording 13 years from now? Hard to say. What can be said without doubt however is that Donnacha Costello is in this for the long haul.
Since 1996 he has released dozens of 12″s and made significant contributions to electronic music from 2001’s classic ambient album Together Is The New Alone to 2004’s universally acclaimed Colorseries to 2006’s rigorously conceptual 6x6=36 amongst others.
Shedding the skin of his ten year old MINIMISE label, Costello emerges from its semantic stranglehold to bring us his new label and platform LOOK LONG. From this first release it is clear that Costello aims to produce work of lasting quality and beauty with little regard for what a turbulent marketplace might expect of him. Complexity and simplicity are addressed in equal measure here and with some surprise we find traces of Eric Satie, Chet Baker, Pat Metheny and Steve Reich. Perhaps unsurprisingly we also find the unmistakable traces of grace and emotion that have become Costello’s trademarks.
Donnacha is currently buried in the studio working on remixes, reviewing archive material and perhaps more importantly, making new music. He will re-emerge for summer live dates starting in May 2009 with shows in Ireland, Germany and Russia. UPCOMING RELEASE DATES LNG1 :: vinyl - april 10th, 2009 / digital - april 13th, 2009 LNG2 :: vinyl - april 20th, 2009 / digital - may 4th, 2009 LNG3 :: vinyl - may 11th, 2009 / digital - may 25th, 2009
